A path to the Arrow-Debreu competitive market equilibrium

چکیده
We present polynomial-time interior-point algorithms for solving the Fisher and Arrow-Debreu competitive market equilibrium problems with linear utilities and n players. Both of them have the arithmetic operation complexity bound of O(n log(1/2)) for computing an 2-equilibrium solution. If the problem data are rational numbers and their bit-length is L, then the bound to generate an exact solution is O(nL) which is in line with the best complexity bound for linear programming of the same dimension and size. This is a significant improvement over the previously best bound O(n log(1/2)) for approximating the two problems using other methods. The key ingredient to derive these results is to show that these problems admit convex optimization formulations, efficient barrier functions and fast rounding techniques. We also present a continuous path leading to the set of the Arrow-Debreu equilibrium, similar to the central path developed for linear programming interior-point methods. This path is derived from the weighted logarithmic utility and barrier functions and the Brouwer fixed-point theorem. The defining equations are bilinear and possess some primal-dual structure for the application of the Newton-based path-following method. متن کاملSpence’s model of Signaling in the job market
The Arrow-Debreu model of a perfectly competitive economy is based on the crucial assumption of complete markets, that is, the assumption that there exists a market (i.e. a price) for each good, for each location, for each future date and for each possible state of nature. The presence of a complete set of forward markets for future contingent delivery eliminates uncertainty since it allows com...
متن کاملThe computation of approximate competitive equilibrium is PPAD-hard
Arrow and Debreu showed in 1954 that, under mild conditions, a competitive economy always has an equilibrium. In this paper, we show that, given a competitive economy that fully respects all the conditions of Arrow-Debreu’s existence theorem, for any positive constant h > 0, it is PPAD-hard to compute a 1 nh -approximate competitive equilibrium.
متن کاملLinear Arrow-Debreu market equilibrium
We study the linear Arrow-Debreu’s model and derive a fix point method to find the market equilibrium. The convergence of this method is proved, while the speed is unknown. Besides that, properties about utility distribution and the partition of buyers are also studied. I. PROBLEM DEFINITION The problems of market equilibrium were initially studied in the domain of mathematical economics. We st...

The theory of general equilibrium with incomplete asset markets (GEI) studies the pricing of securities and commodities, and the interactions of perfectly competitive asset markets and commodity markets in determining consumption and investment. Since financial economics is fundamentally concerned with the pricing of securities, and since macroeconomics is fundamentally concerned with the real ...
